Kolkata, January 18, 2018: Bengali’s practice of cartoon here
comes to an end when well-known cartoonist and author Chandi Lahiri passed away
this Thursday afternoon at about 1:50 pm in R.G. Kar Hospital. He was 88 at the
time of death.
Unwell for
the few days and after he was diagnosed with pneumonia, he was admitted to the
R.G. Kar Hospital two days ago, said his family members.
Lahiri was
suffering from age related ailments from quite some times. He was admitted to
the hospital because of his deteriorating health. He was survived by his wife and
daughter, Trina Lahiri who is also a reputed artist.
Chandi Lahiri’s
cartoons reflected the socio-political situations in West Bengal as well as the
socio-economic aspects of the society in the entire country for more than 50
years.
The renowned
cartoonist had an enormous number of fan-following among-st the readers of
various daily newspapers and tabloids where his works got appeared. His
cartoons were used in government campaigns because of his unique style which
made him an institution.
The famed
cartoonist was born on March 13, 1931 in Nadia district. He also got involved
in politics in his younger days as a young teenager.
Started his
career as a journalist in the year of 1952 at DainikLoksevak newspaper, ChandiLahiri gradually became a full-time
cartoonist within the next one decade. He began to work as a cartoonist in
1961. He went on to join Ananda bazaar Patrika in the year of 1962. He had also
written different books on cartoon. ‘Bidesher Chokhebangla’,
‘Chandir Chandipath’ and ‘Bangla Cartooneritihas’ (History of
cartoons in Bengal) is one of his excellent works.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee twitted
after his emancipation to extend her condolences,“Saddened at the passing away of eminent artist and cartoonist
Chandi Lahiri. May his work continue to engage and entertain. My heartfelt
condolences to his family.”
